About Us

Craig Smith
Entering the financial services industry in 2007, right before the Great Recession, was eyeopening and formational for Craig. Those that had a financial plan and the posture of an open hand (as opossed to a death grip on their money) fared much, much better.
In 2009, Craig joined von Borstel and Associates. Today, after more than a decade and a half, Craig counts it a true blessing to have witnessed the progress of many clients from undefined goals (and some worries) to the achievement of concrete aspirations accompanied by increased confidence in their personal circumstances.
Craig holds multiple professional designations including CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ / CFP® Practitioner, Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®), and Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA®) among others.
A native Oregonian, Craig was born and raised in The Dalles. Growing up, Craig spent time working on the family cattle ranch and learning many life lessons along the way. His dad, a fourth generation cattle rancher, and his mom, a dedicated public school teacher, imparted simple, down-home values and work ethic that continue to shape him today.
Craig and his wife, Melinda, are involved in their church and love to get outdoors and be active together. They have hiked over 1000 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, including a 200-mile backpacking adventure completing the John Muir Trail. They are blessed with two daughters and a son, and although the distances have gotten shorter, continue to enjoy backpacking, hiking, and bicycling as a family!

Anson Lilienthal
Anson has spent most of his life in Oregon. His passion for creating lasting relationships and helping people navigate their financial goals brought him to von Borstel & Associates in 2019.
When Anson’s not in the office, or reading endless articles about markets, he will likely be found spending time with his wife, Elizabeth, and 3 sons, Kaiden, Kole and Kooper. In stewarding their time they are likely to be found spending time with their church community, traveling the world, attending live sporting events, or cheering at their kids’ events. And each fall, Anson’s sporting dreams inevitably turn to the (misguided) belief that “his” Dallas Cowboys will somehow win another Super Bowl!

Stewardship
Everything you own
owns you.
Pause for a moment and let that sink in.
Reframing the discussion of financial goals and responsibilities in terms of stewardship can be a “gamechanger” if we embrace it.
Do you see yourself as the owner attempting to amass wealth and toys so you can “finish first”? Are you trying to protect yourself from some future financial catastrophe and in doing so can’t give yourself permission to enjoy the moment?
What if we reframe the discussion to see ourselves merely as stewards?
A steward isn’t the owner of the asset or resource, but is a trusted manager entrusted to make wise decisions.
Many see themselves as stewarding resources to minimize their impact ecologically. Biblically, one might simplify scripture to say “God owns it all”. What does it mean for you to live out your calling in light of your role as a steward? Or put another way, what does stewardship mean to you?
While your definition will probably be unique, it is our belief that it has to be more than simply managing a balance sheet and cash flow. You are a steward of your time, talent, resources and relationships. Does your financial plan prioritize all of those conflicting elements?
We would love to hear your definition and see how we can support you in your journey toward meaningful stewardship of all of your resources!
